And in 2019, at the age of 37, I had my second nervous breakdown.
I was at work in a board meeting when my whole body started shaking.
I was having a panic attack.
At that moment, my main concern wasn’t my own health or wellbeing, it was making sure that no one else noticed that I wasn’t OK.
(Because I was terrified of being perceived as ‘weak’ by others, especially at work)
I managed to suppress my panic attack through the meeting and left the office straight after.
I’d been diagnosed with panic disorder 10 years before, so some of the sensations I recognised, however this time it was different.
My legs got me to a local park bench where I completely broke down.
Something major was happening to me, it was like my whole body was screaming in pain.
I kept repeating to myself out loud, over and over, ‘what’s going on’ ‘what’s happening to me’ when suddenly…
I heard a voice say ‘you need to go back to your childhood, you need to deal with growing up with an alcoholic mother’ and bam.
That was it. The truth I had been avoiding my whole life…
I had convinced myself (and everyone else around me) that I was immune to the chaos I grew up around, and I somehow managed to come out the other side totally FINE.
I read all the self-help books, trained myself to smile through my pain and suppress any ‘negative’ feelings I ever had.
I learned all the positivity mindset tips and tricks, and became the person society told me I needed to become, the one who would light up any room.
No one person (not even me) had any idea how much of my life was an act.
No matter what tragedy was happening in my life, I would NEVER allow myself to be sad because growing up, showing emotions was forbidden.
Mum’s funeral, I was 25, not one tear was shed.
My older brother took his own life, I was 26, turned up to work the next day FINE
and I kept masking, day in, day out, for years and years.
I was determined to prove to the world that I was OK by over achieving in every area of my life.
I truly believed I’d unlocked a special code to doing extremely well against all the odds, until this moment in the boardroom…
I could no longer pretend I was FINE.
I was clearly NOT. FINE.
I was terrified, in complete mental darkness, convinced that suicide was the only option to escape this pain I was in.
I was lost in this sea of darkness for months on end.
No one could explain what was happening to me.
I shut myself off from everyone; friends, family, work…
My doctor wanted to medicate me, but I knew that medication was not the solution, I knew that something deeper was going on, but I had no idea what.
One thing was clear; I had to face my fear. The fear that I’d spent a lifetime running away from. That fear of being ME.
What I soon started to realise was that...
I'd convinced myself that if I could just be ‘perfect’ maybe one day I would be OK.
I got the career, the car, the house.. everything that society says I needed to be ‘happy’ and sure those things felt great for a bit, but they soon wore off and I went back to feeling like a ghost, detached from reality, like I was watching myself in a movie.
After months of deep excavation, the epiphany came…
The person I had been for 37 years, was fake.
And the excruciating emotional pain I was experiencing was grief..
Grief for the version of myself that I had to become to survive my difficult childhood.
Grief for the parents I needed but never had, grief for a lost childhood.
And this grief manifested itself as panic disorder, social anxiety, agoraphobia and depression.
I spent my days overwhelmed and mentally exhausted, doing everything at 100 miles an hour.
I was reactive, defensive, always on the verge of a meltdown.
I binged everything I could from TV, food, to alcohol, drugs; anything I could get my hands on to stop me feeling my feelings.
I was a people pleasing, workaholic; obsessed with making everyone around me happy while leaving myself empty in the process.
I had absolutely no idea where to start.
People would say ‘you just need to do the inner work’ and I was like ‘wtf does that even mean?’
But I just started somewhere and kept going.
Two 12 step programmes, 6 years of inner child healing, and a year of somatic healing later (not to mention the 20 years of therapy I’d had before the breakdown)...
I was a completely different person; I stopped caring about what other people thought about me, I said ‘no’ to things I didn’t want to do WITHOUT GUILT, I spoke my truth without breaking down into tears every time, I held space for all of my emotions without judgement, I sobered up, stopped binging on food, had more control of my thoughts, rewired my vicious inner critic and finally felt comfortable with myself.
